So who's watching Doctor Who?

Posted May 6th, 2008 by Michelle

Any other Doctor Who fans out there? While hubby was channel surfing the other day, I noticed that Sci Fi is only a few episodes behind. That's awesome! Of course, I have to get my fix as it comes out, so I don't wait for it to air on TV here. Still that's a vast improvement over the months behind the UK we used to be.

Anyone else watching? If not, why not? It's only the most awesome show ever! :P

I can't wait for next week. That trailer was... interesting... Smile Won't spoil, but I can't wait to find out what that was all about!

Michelle

I've been watching Dr Who since I discovered it in the 70s. The first episode I ever watched was a re-run of the very first episode. Watched the Troughton and Pertwee series, but Tom baker is my Doctor. Kind of lost track of it when Peter Davidson came along. Picked up on the new series when I downloaded the first episode with the 9th Dr when it was leaked early.

My friend introduced me to it in the mid '80s when I was a teenager in St Louis. I joined the CIA and would watch it on PBS whenever my mom would let me stay up that late and borrowed my friend's tapes whenever I had access to a VCR. At the time Colin Baker was the current Doctor but that was long before the days of downloading the latest episode, so I filled up on Tom Baker and Peter Davidson. Not sure which is my favorite. I go back and forth.

I never lost track of Doctor Who, and spent quite a bit of time collecting the old series. So I was estatic when they announced the new series in 2005. I love it! The old series will always have a special place in my heart, of course, but this new series is amazing! I just watched the finale last weekend. Sigh. Now I have to wait all the way until Christmas. Sad And then next year we don't even have a proper season. I swear, if I ever win the lottery, I'm going to fund some extra episodes. :D

Do you know any other local Who fans? I would love to find someone to watch it with but, being married, hanging out with a guy to watch a show is kind of akward. I keep hoping to find a female Who fan but all my local friends are into things like scrapbooking and chick flicks. Not a sci fi fan in the lot. Sad

Michelle

Other than one of the summer help kids ate work that I've set up with all the new Who, SJA and Torchwood to date, you're the only other person that I am aware of. RE: Married, yeah, my wife has issues with me dating anyone but her these days. Must be a British thing.

LOL! I wasn't meaning dating. But even just strictly platonic relationships with guys are difficult when you're married. Even though nothing would ever happen, it's still akward. I was friends with guys for so much of my life, since my interests (science fiction, computers, photography) are in male dominated areas. So my quest to find a female friend that shares my interests hasn't been fruitful so far. I'll keep trying, though. Somewhere in this Coulee Region there has to be a female Whovian. I mean, there's 100K people around here... I just need 1. Smile-Big

Good luck. While I've not gotten to watch an episode of Dr Who properly, I did get to watch a couple eps of Torchwood on the BBC while I was in the UK in Feb/March. Sounds like your interests mirror mine. I recently sold off all of my darkroom stuff. Digital photography is just too easy.

I've never been to the UK. I'd love to be someplace where they don't look at you funny if you say "Doctor Who". Smile-Big I downloaded the first season of Torchwood but only got around to watching a few episodes. It's definitely different from Doctor Who. I was really shocked at the adultness of it. I'm not a prude... Just wasn't expecting that.

If you're into photography, check out http://lacrosseareacameraclub.org .The site is rather horribly out of date, I'm afraid, but there's still some good info there. My plan is to revamp the site before the season starts back up in September, but September is coming really, really fast. Surprise

Michelle

They'll still look at you funny...you'd have an accent.

I tried to figure out how to post some photos in the photo gallerie here late last evening, but the need for sleep overcame my curiosity. I'll look at it some more this weekend if I get time.

LOL! Yeah, that's true. I'm no good with voices, either, so I don't think I could pull off any of the UK accents believably.

I added a link to the gallery for adding photos. It's rough, like so much else on this site, but functional. Smile I'd love to see someone else's photos there. Getting bored looking at mine. Wink

Davros lives !!! Surprise

Has the Sci-Fi channel played the season finale in the States yet?

No, not yet. They had Midnight playing Friday so it should be a couple more weeks. I guess we should be careful talking about the last two eps until they air here since not everyone is obsessive enough to get them right after they air in the UK. Smile-Big

I'll see about adding a filter to hide spoilers when I get a chance.

Michelle

since it appears there a lot of us... 3 ? No spoilers please unless you let loose with the secret to getting the eps before they are on the sci-fi channel. Is in the library?

Pirate Bay

I get them sent from a friend in the UK a few hours after it airs there. You can also find them on torrent sites and on usenet. Since not everyone has the know-how to get them that way, let's hold off on discussing the last two eps until they air on SciFi, ok? I'm not going to have time to work on that spoiler hiding filter for a while, anyway.

Michelle

Mums the word!

Bad wolf... I wonder if Davros returns eventually... remember no spoilers,

I rewatched Turn Left last night too. Excellent episode, rubbish special effect with the giant Junebug on Donna's back.

Ya those time bugs were sad.....good ep tho'

At least it wasn't a spider... Wink

Man, I've been "going to bed" for half an hour. Ok, really must. Closing the lid. Goodnight.

Michelle

Here I sit... having guessed it was the return of Davros.... it did figure. Somewhat bad make up... oh well.. cool anyway.

Bad? Compred to the Davros from the time of the 4th Doctor, it was pretty darn good. You should check out Dr Who Confidential and see Neil Gorton creating the makeup for Davros. I was less impressed with the intergalactic cellphone signal radiating out from the planet.

I was disappointed with the Davros bit. He isn't much of a villan. Always going on about his Daleks but they seem to think of him as more of a pet. About the only time he really seemed important was when they needed him for non logical thinking. Uneasy

Michelle

Wouldn't the Daleks look down on Davros naturally? He isn't really a Dalek, therefore he is inferior.

Oh, sure, that's their reason. But the whole thing always seemed a little silly to me. He created them, more than once, and he was good enough for that but not good enough to be a "real dalek". Why? Is he not mutated enough? Or because he has those pesky emotions? And you'd think Davros would be smart enough to create a race of Daleks that thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But, no, this new race that he created out of bits of his own body treats him just like the old one.

Michelle

My friend says the Daleks should be deleted.

LOL! Oh, that's cool! I need to get some fun Doctor Who stuff. Smile

Michelle

My daughter and I both have a Cyberman. They were filled with bubble bath.

This guy thinks everyone should be exterminated! I have to keep him boxed up.

cool toys... there's a group in UK building real Da
leks, guess they drive around in them.. "Project Dalek", I think.

Davros has one enduring/redeeming factor... like Dr. Loveless in WWild West, he always manages to come back from his obvious death/destruction. If he was too smart the Doctor couldn't whip him every other season.... He did afterall create the Mark 5 travel machine...... ( Daleks just keep him around as cheif mechanic in pit.... ) How he turns wrenches with those stubby arms is beyond me...

That sounds awesome, yet claustrophobic. Smile

I know they can't make the bad gues too good. It's already stretching plausibility that the Doctor can defeat so many as it is. It just always bugged me about Davros, I guess.

Michelle

The master always seemed to pop up more too, another one of the too good to be true bad guys.. but the doc whips them all.
