Something that has been bothering me for some time is the huge amount of my life that is online and therefore mostly invisible to those around me. My husband knows a little of what I do. He knows this website exists and that I spend a lot of time in the Drupal community. But he doesn't know specifics. He doesn't know all my accounts and my passwords or even all the sites I frequent. If I died right now, he might manage to notify a few people but mostly I would just vanish without a trace from the online world.
So I read this article with interest: New services promise online life after death
But now, as online usage increases and social-media sites soar in popularity, more companies are popping up to try and fill that void created in your digital life after death.
It's a reasonably priced service and would certainly bring some peace of mind... except, as the person quoted in the article points out, I'd be entrusting quite a bit of personal information to one company. If that company is hacked, that's a lot of information to fall into the wrong hands. Definitely something to think about before signing up with it. Still, though, it would be nice having so much taken care of in the event of my death. I'll be looking into it more, at any rate.
What about you? Do you have any plans in place to take care of your online life when you're gone?
Michelle
