Where do you go for tech support?

Computers like everything else eventually break. It can be something minor like a missing critical file, or something big like a processor that overheated and cooked. Where do you turn to help? The local 10 year old, the Geek's who drive around in a black and white VW Bug, a local computer shop or do you just go buy a new one of the things?

I'm lucky enough to have computers as both my profession and my passion, there are very few things I can't fix myself. I've soldered new components on motherboards, I've re-installed my OS, and everything in between. I took my computer to Best Buy one time when I was feeling sick and just didn't want to deal with it. after shelling out $180 for them to replace a hard drive ($110 for the drive, $70 for the drive install) and them not even TRYING to recover the data off the old drive I said never again. I took the old hard drive and was able to get the data off of it, which is really all I wanted them to do in the first place, but in my weakened condition got talked into a new drive and letting them install it.

So do you do your own computer fixes or take it somewhere?

I go to my husband when I need tech support. Smile

For people in the La Crosse area, I want to put in a plug for Orange Computer downtown. I haven't personally needed his services but I know him and he knows his stuff. Plus, you'd be supporting a local business instead of a chain store.

Yup I actually help out at Orange Computer from time to time when he gets real busy. He's got great prices (to the point that I sometimes wonder how he stays open) is a nice guy, and will go above and beyond to make sure you get your money's worth.

As long as she doesn't ask for programming help, I usually get roped into doing something. Especially when some hardware needs to be installed or setup. Funny how something I won't use ends up being my responsibility to get working... Crazy

Heh... Not too likely I'll ask you for programming help. But you're always welcome to ask me. Wink We each have our strengths and weaknesses.

We go to Computer Docs here in Holmen.
Well I broke two laptops so we have a desktop and have not had any issues with it so that is good.

My tech support occurs in my house. Personally the desktop stuff drives my crazy because I am so used to dealing with enterprise class stuff, but I get through it. At the moment I'm putting Windows 7 on my wifes system.

If only Apple made itunes for linux... (sigh)

Really? I haven't tried it under wine. The BIG item is Pinnacle, I don't know if that is wine-able or not. I don't know if I could convert my wife to open-source video editing or not. I also don't know what good video editing software is available in the OS community either.

What level of video editing are you looking for? if it's simple splicing, fades and such I like Kino

Getting video from USB or firewire. Some of the video comes from an RCA source and there is a USB device that came with the Pinnacle software that converts it to a USB signal. I have no idea if it will function under linux or not. That will require some investigation on my part.

I use Kino to for just that purpose, it automatically creates chapters each scene change and is VERY good... check it out.

I do it myself. I've got an old laptop with Windows 98 still on it. Need to keep that one for some old DOS applications for programming some radios. I've got a desktop running CentOS, another one running Ubuntu Krusty Koala or some such, another one running Vista and a netbook running Linux Mint. That's just a partial list.
