What are they doing on highway 53?

They've got the median on highway 53 tore up all the way up past OT and I'm curious if anyone knows what they're doing. Last I saw, they'd put in a strip of asphalt the whole way. It looks almost like a bike path, but too narrow and putting a bike path in a highway median is a little nutty anyway. I couldn't find any reference to it on the DOT site. Anyone know what they're doing?

Ha ha! I've been thinking the same exact thing. It does looks like a bike path but today I saw they added holes at regular intervals in the new asphalt so that blows that theory. It was a kinda crazy thought. Today I started thinking maybe they were gonna put in a guard rail but I don't know why they'd put one on that side especially that long. We'll find out sooner or later. Smile

My husband said he heard on the radio that it's some sort of experimental cable. But he didn't know if that was cable as in cable TV or cable as in a steel cable. So not much light on the mystery. But that rules out bike path and lights, I guess. Smile

From what I understand, it will be similar to . I am not completely sure, but I saw these on my way to the brewers game. It can't be more than 2 or 3 feet tall, and consists of steel cables. Near Milwaukee, there was three cables, and I am assuming that they were under tension because of the hefty bases that they had near the emergency vehicle U-turn things(or bridges for that matter). They didn't look like they would do much, but maybe it is enough to stop a car. It will be interesting during the winter to see how well they will hold up to the snow, and possible a hit with a snow plow. I may not be 100% right, so bear with me, but this should be somewhat accurate information!

high tension barrier

ps. I like how I was told that my post was considered spam!

I also found this line of text on the DOT website.

explanation

well I hope you can read it, having problems finding the right scale. Just to completely cover it, page 12 of http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/state/sixyear/docs/swrlisting.pdf

**edit** the 053 at the beginning of the images indicates the highway. Since the project was in the middle of the page, it didn't include the column titles. I was surprised to actually find anything

Oooooh! Now that I see the picture it makes so much more sense. When my husband said he heard on the radio something about cables, I couldn't get my head around what cables would have to do with a strip of asphalt. Thanks for clarifying. That makes so much more sense, now.

Don't take the spam thing personally. The service I use analyzes the posts and it decides if a post is questionable or not. It's nice because I can leave posting open to anonymous users without having captcha tests every time. Still, it's annoying getting them and sometimes it seems like there's a streak where it's considering everything to be spam. I think I'll set up another user group that doesn't have the spam check and move people to it once I know they're not spammers.

Just saw your other comment. You know, I read all through that document trying to find it but I was looking specifically for highway 53. Doh!

Thanks again!

Oh, doh! I didn't even notice the numbers on the left side meant anything. Makes sense now that you pointed it out.

Another article: http://www.holmencourier.com/articles/2008/08/29/news/01roadwork.txt

Many people saw the asphalt strip being installed in the median and thought it was for some kind of bike lane. What it’s really for is to keep the high-tension cable barrier system free from weeds

Guess I wasn't alone. Wink
