User titles

If you've been to other forums, you've probably seen user titles. Sometimes they're generic like "Newbie" and "Old timer" but other times they're related to the site's theme. I've been thinking of adding them here, but I can't decide on what to use for the titles. Here's some thoughts:

Use generic titles: Newbie, Regular, Old timer (3 isn't many but I can't think of more...)
Use the local landscape as a theme: Coulee, [some bluff names], Grandad Bluff
Use the CROw as a theme: Egg, Hatchling, Crow, um... Pie? Wink
Use communities: Village, Town, City, County, State, Country

I'm also thinking of letting people set their own titles once they get X posts. So maybe have just a few automatic ones and then they pick.

What do you think? If we can nail down some strong contenders, I can put up a poll. Smile

User titles are just a fun thing that shows up under your name on posts. So you'd start out with it saying "egg" and then after you post, say 20 times, it changes to "fledgling" and then after 20 more posts it changes to "crow". Or whatever we decide to go with. The key is that it should look like a progression and I need at least 3, preferably more. Then after, say 100 posts, you get to pick your own title. Those numbers are probably too low... I'm basing it on the level of activity now but I probably should make it higher so it holds up if we get busy. But that gives you an idea.

ok, I get it !! Sounds good to me.
I think ebay does this sort of thing with stars - depending on how much you sell or buy!

Yeah, something like that. Only this is with words. So any thoughts on which words to use?

Crow might be tough to incorporate, but you could start with egg, hatchling, etc. Old Crow could be the top of the pile.

Old crow at the top? What, you don't like pie? "Four and twenty black birds baked in a pie..." Wink

Yeah, I just don't know. I kind of like the egg, hatchling, fledgling part but the metaphor does fall apart after a while. I'd really prefer to have 5 or 6 levels. Will have to think some more.

Maybe call newbies a Rockland working up to a La Crosse or something based on local town sizes. Only problem is that it may confuse people on where others are actually located if they don't know what it is. I also like the bluff idea. Could also use local river names... Kickapoo, Black, Mississippi, etc. I really like the idea of keeping it local as this is Coulee Region Online. Just some thoughts.

Hmm... I like the rivers idea. I was looking at bluffs but the fact that I had to look up the bluff names and elevations tells me most people aren't likely to know that off the top of their heads. LOL Probably most won't be able to put rivers in order of size but at least the names will be recognizable.

I had thought about town sizes but that could get confused with the person's location. Getting peoples' locations listed is on my to do list, actually. So not keen on using that.

Rivers, though... Yeah, that one has promise. I'll have to get a list of river names in the area and put a list together.

Thanks,

Michelle

The rivers thing might be confusing too as lots of towns are named after rivers or vice-versa what ever the case may be.

That's true. Maybe I should stick to land features. Start out with "Coulee" since that's lowest and then go to "River" then hmm... not sure what in between until "Bluffs". Man, this is hard. LOL I would like to have at least 6 to make it more fun.

I vote land or child development.

Hmm... Child development? Like newborn, baby, etc? That would give a lot of choices... Will have to think about that one. I'm leaning towards a land/elevation based one, though. Just need to find some more terms.

Coulee
River
Plain
Gentle slope
Hill
Bluff
Grandad Bluff
Mt La Crosse? Hehe... That's probably shorter than Grandad, but it's a "mountain" Wink Ok, maybe not...
Custom

So that gives us 8 levels. Can anyone think of anything else that would go in there? I could maybe put "stream" before "river" to bump it up one more.

Here is a thought, it is not so much about what you use as the progression topic, but in adding an adjective to imply the level of the progression topic. So say:

Fledgling riverrat
Apprenticed swampwalker
Journeyman barhopper
Craftsman bridgejumper
Masterbluffdiver.

Can work with anything really, those are just examples.

Hmm... That's an interesting idea.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to this. Been trying to get some other committments taken care of before working on this site. Hopefully soon. Smile
