Pettibone campground issues/ What is the deal here?

You can read several stories on this topic at the Tribune. Just search for Pettibone .
Anyone have any views on this issue? I feel LaCrosse is always changing the rules as they go, and people get hurt in the process.
The road to nowhere just to condemn a billboard on the causeway is just one example, and the list goes on and on.
It sounds like the new Mayor might just have a little influence on this matter and get it taken care of, but we shall see.
So, what do you think??

Wow, I remember seeing a headline about them not paying their bills but didn't realize it was such a mess. Interesting reading. I don't really have views, yet... Only read a bit. But it does sound like a mess.

There is a lease/contract and the city feels there is a violation of that lease. The past due dollar amount owed to the city is significant. I say litigate the issue and let a judge/jury decide if there is a violation or not. If the leasee owes money then they should be forced to pay. If they have not broken the lease, then the city should be responsible for all attorney and court costs. Seems pretty simple to me!

The cities claims sound legit, but like VA I think they should just go to court, then it comes out in the open what is really going on.

That's a good idea. Bickering back and forth doesn't help anyone. Take it to court, provide the documentation, and let the judge decide.

I agree that taking it to court might be the best option. One BIG problem with that. The company doesn't have the almost unlimited amount of money the city has to litigate this issue. And there is no guarantee that if the city loses the case, that the judge would force the city to pay for the company's legal expenses.

Bottom line: the city has this company over a barrel, what with the barrel about to go over the cliff.

But what if the people running the campgrounds is ripping off the city? If any party is innocent you hire the best attorney you can find and let the legal system do it's thing. If the city has made up this stuff, a judge should make the city pay legal fee's. Personally I'd like to see this go to court, I've been down there a few times for weddings and also visited one "campsite" which was VERY permanent with a huge deck and garden pond. If the city has made up the charges the new mayor will/should step in and stand up for the renters.

I can't imagine why the city WOULD make up such a thing.. I mean what the hell? I just can't comprehend why they would.

I'm not on the inside, but the city probably isn't making up anything. But contracts are not always clear, and even if they seem to be air tight, the city does have motivation to ask for more than they should be getting. And to be fair, the private party also has motivation to pay less.

There are so many rumors attached to this that makes it hard to figure out. Why would the city do an audit and then let it sit so long before even approaching it again? Why would they not have acted immediatly after the audit was completed? Oh so many questions.....

I agree with you on the Mayor standing up, and I believe he has done that by bringing this to the table. I just am having a hard time figuring out the local government in LaCrosse. They have done some really questionable things, like the road to nowhere to condemn a sign, and the tiff stuff on the riverfront, and the parking ramp on 4th street. Why would you give out of town contractors the contracts for a lot of these jobs time and again?Specially non union and unproven? All valid questions.
