Some time ago, I questioned why Holmen has an unusual population sign. Well, looks like that's changed. The other day I was heading towards Holmen on Sand Lake and noticed the normal population sign was gone and there was a new standard issue green sign on the left. Anyone know what happened? I'm going to miss our old sign. It was nicer looking than the boring old green.
On another note, there's no population filled in on it. I'm curious what they're going to do about that. I believe the population as of the 2000 census was around 5000. The population sign we had said 7336 and it changed now and then. I just ran across a real estate site that claims the population of Holmen is 10,951! If that's accurate, that's amazing. That means the population has doubled in the last 8 years. I know there's been a lot of building but, wow, that's quite a lot of growth.

I found an answer to the missing population over on Onalaska Community Life :
Mystery solved. I'm still going to miss our old signs, though.

And the winner is...
7899!
The numbers are up and lower than I expected. Still higher than they were, though. Quite a large village.
The numbers look like they are meant to be changed. Probably a good idea. Less work than making new signs.

I also think its funny that there is one Holmen sign just after you pass Hwy OT heading North on 35 then another one as you near Kwik Trip. When do you actually enter? lol
I never thought of it that way... You're right, though, the welcome sign is quite a ways in. My guess is that the population signs are right on the border to mark them but the welcome sign needed a bit of land to put it on so they put it as close as they could.
