U.S. News & World Report magazine has named La Crosse one of the nation’s 10 Best Places to Live, ranking with Albuquerque, N.M., Austin, Texas, and St. Augustine, Fla.[...]
The story describes La Crosse as “a great staging ground for exploring the natural wonders of the upper Mississippi River,” with an “active outdoor culture” that includes camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and skiing. With a 2008 median home sale price of $113,000, it’s also an affordable destination, the story said
I have lived in the Coulee Region since 1995 and love it here. There is so much natural beauty all around us from the bluffs to the river. The people are friendly and crime is low. The cost of living is quite reasonable. We go back to Sheboygan every few months and get sticker shock shopping at the grocery stores there. Everything is so much more expensive and the selection is dismal. That's one of the first things we noticed when we got here. We went to Festival and were amazed at how huge the store was. Then we found Woodmans and were blown away.
What don't I like?
- Winter. Hate it. If I could be a snowbird, I would.
- Too far from family. Not really La Crosse's fault. It's just too far from Colorado where my family lives.
- Not enough tech jobs. This is a sticky one for us. If my husband loses his job, we may be forced to move just because it would be hard for him to find another one here.

What about you? Love the area? Hate it? Think the top 10 ranking is spot on or they must have been smoking something?
