Information overload

Do you ever feel like there's just too much information coming at you too fast? I have two Twitter accounts, two Facebook accounts, a bunch of blogs in my feed reader, plus I read the Tribune and various news sites like CNN. I'm trying to keep connected with what's going on so that I can write about it here but it seems like I spend so much time keeping up with what everyone else is writing that I rarely have time to do any writing of my own.

Anyone else feel like the information highway is more like an information raging river and you're in an inner tube hanging on for dear life?

Re: Information overload

I agree that without placing limits and managing my computer, I am liable to drown in the river of information. That's one of my objectives, and actually a theme for this year, to implement organization in several areas of my life, including my internet life.

I'm actually wondering if I can afford the time to do things for a secondary purpose. I may have to prune some activities and interests and focus on just a few things that I can manage well in 2010. Gardening will be one thing. Reading at least a book a month will be another. And of course I'll want to brew up a mess of beer and wine to share with friends for a third. After that, my plate may be about as full as I can handle. Oh, I also need to force myself into a daily exercise routine, there goes another 30 minutes to an hour of my day!

Re: Information overload

I do feel that way, but digitally I'm MUCH more organized than physically and I'm quite adept at wadding into that raging river and plucking the tastiest information fish from the river and letting the rest roll on by.

@Mel: Don't forget posting in the forums. Wink

@CC: I'm just as disorganized digitally. If I wade in, I get swept away by the current and, before I know it, it's time for bed and I haven't finished what I set out to do.

Re: Information overload

In teh digital world I try to organize my data, but usually end up with folders here and there that I always intend on combining. Now my home office on the other hand is completely organized. Laughing out loud

This was several years ago and resulted in an accident that I'll talk about at a different time. My new office is much smaller and still has stuff piled everywhere.

Re: Information overload

I always use the excuse "Einstein never had a clean desk" when mine gets bad, but mine hits a certain level and I go on a mad cleaning spree.

Re: Information overload

Back then I knew were most everything was, all you had to do was ask and I knew which pile or two it was in. Imagine what I would have been able to do if I had an organized office.

As you can in the photos in addition to be my computer room this room was used for collectible glass storage, repairs of various things and storage of car parts for my kit project. The car parts are nearly all outside now, and if they are not they are in the official storage room now. The paper stacks are nearly gone because they were tossed or because they have been filed away (about time!). I still have way to much stuff in my new office and one of these days I'll finish organizing it so I don't just have a path to walk through I'll actually see the whole floor.

Re: Information overload

I'm the same way, no matter how messy my room is I always know where stuff is. I'm bordering on it being too messy right now but have too many projects in the works to fix that right now.

Re: Information overload

So now we have Buzz in Gmail. I'm pointedly refusing to even look at it. The last thing I need is to get sucked into yet another thing to distract me. LOL!

Re: Information overload

I've been ignoring it because while I do have a Gmail account it is just so I can sign up for other google offerings. I have my own e-mail server that I prefer to use so I can control what address goes where.

Re: Information overload

I checked it out. I came, I saw, I was underwhelmed, I left. That's all.

Re: Information overload

I too have been studiously ignoring it.
I haven't even had a chance to look into google wave properly yet.
