If you didn't live in the Coulee Region, where would you live? For me, there's a couple of choices. First off, if there were any way we could live in Colorado I would jump at it. My mom, step dad, and sisters are there and I'd love to be closer to them. It makes me sad that my kids rarely get to see their grandparents. Plus, it's so much sunnier there and I hate the endless cloudy days of Wisconsin's Winter. So that would be my first choice. Another place I'd like to live is San Diego. I lived there as a teen and miss it. There's no family connection, there, though, so I don't know if I'd jump at the chance. But I'd consider it.
It's funny, though, because if you'd asked me just 5 years ago I would have said any place warmer. I had no real ties here and was itching to move away. We only came out here to go to school and I never intended this to be my home forever. But kids change that. I've met friends through MOMS Club and have started connecting with the community. We've put down roots, finally, and now it would take a lot to get me to move.
So what about you folks? If you didn't live here, where would it be? And why?
Michelle

For us it depends on jobs. I can be more flexible because my degree is Early Childhood. My husband needs something in computers so a small town wouldn't be a great place to look unless we are willing to commute.
In the future we may stay around here but maybe not La Crosse. If we moved it would probibly be to West Virginia. Thats where my husbands dad, step-mom and grandparents live.
I was originally moving from SLC Utah and we had either La Crosse or Winchester TN to move to (we checked about 13 cities for their economy, schooling, crime, etc.), so yeah, that's where would live. I'm happy though that I don't live there and now if I wouldn't live in La Crosse, I would move towards Arcadia, but not out of state.
I've been up to Arcadia. Nice area but quite a drive from La Crosse. I lived in La Crosse at the time and was thinking of applying for a job there but the commute would have killed me.
Michelle
Donny works at Ashley, so that's why we would move closer to there.
Yeah, that's where I meant. I guess I didn't actually say that, did I?
At the time, they used Visual FoxPro, which was what I worked with, and there wasn't a lot of local jobs for that skill. Probably none at all anymore. That was a decade ago.
Oh, man, did I just say a decade?
Off to cry now...

Vermont, Upstate NY, New hampshire, or western Mass. I grew up in Chicago, moved here about 6 years ago. I had to travel those states for work, and the northeast area really reminds me of Wisconsin, except they have mountains. Vermont is just a whole different culture...all about locally owned businesses, artisan work, environmental awareness, and all those other things that we'd all benefit from. Plus its just beautiful up there.
I love my rose colored glasses kind of world of padded rooms, air guitar, pushing buttons and singling like a rock star. Headphones full blast so that the word "WHAT" has become a common part of my vocabulary. Not caring that I sometimes wear leg warmers and blue eye shadow and dance in the studio like Elaine from Seinfeld. Where else can you have a job that lets you surf the net for funny stories and then make fun of the people in the story....publicly? Of course as much as I love being in radio the area is not known for its high paying radio jobs therefore I live in what I like to call the "Mobile Mansion". It's a 1966 (yep that's older than me) mobile home with crank out windows even ... how "groovy" is that? But I rent from my girlfriends Dad and the rent is what I can afford on my Rammen Noodle paycheck. Do I miss living in Germany where I could run free though the castle ruins? Do I miss living in Indiana or Michigan where they shared the same cold winters as we do here? Do I miss living in Arkansas or Georgia where it was warmer and I had that awesome southern accent? Do I miss Ohio... and what do I say about a state like Ohio anyway? Am I lusting after a different view on the world? Someplace without the bitter cold of Wisconsin? I guess for me... It doesn't matter where you are there's always going to be a place you'd rather be. So for now... Wisconsin is good for me. At least until another opportunity comes along where I can be stuffed into another padded room where I can push buttons, dance like Elaine, sing like a rock star and get paid better so I can upgrade from crank out windows. I just hope I have enough hearing left to recognize when opportunity knocks.... maybe I'll install a doorbell or that clapper thing so the lights flash when someone is at my door.
Smile... it makes people wonder what you're up too!
Gina
LOL! Oh, man, that made me do more than smile.
Nearly busted out laughing which would have woke Josh. Better keep a lid on that. But that image of you dancing there... Well, when I picture a DJ, that's not what I normally picture.
I do need to come see you work some time... LOL
Michelle
You and the other daycare moms should plan a field trip here. I could show you all kinds of things and it would be fun for the kids. Just let me know and we can figure out a time and schedule and I can then get approval from management.
Glad I could make you laugh. Laughter is the music of the soul!
Gina
Actualy, if that's something the management would be willing to do, I could suggest it as an activity for the Holmen MOMS Club that I'm in. We've already toured WKBT and that went well. We even got to sit in there while they were on the air! I was a bit too freaked out, though, that my kids would suddenly start screaming and I didn't stay for that part. They kept assuring us that it was ok but I knew I'd be mortified if it happened. LOL
Downside to tours like that during the school year is the bigger kids are in school so you mostly end up with 3 and under who haven't a clue what's going on. It's interesting for the parents, though. We just toured Woodmans not long ago and that was fun. I'm going to try to write up a blog post if I can remember enough by the time I get to it.
Michelle
Just let me know if and when.
I would love to do this sometime. I think something like that would even warrant taking the kids out of school for a bit.
There is no need to take the kids out of school. I work until 6pm so you can all come later in the day if you would like. I just need details so that I can get approval from management.
I sent an email to the board suggesting it. I'll let you know when I hear back.
Thanks,
Michelle
Italy. I've been there twice & I'm in love with it. Theres a treasure around every corner - usually an ancient church but wonderful & beautiful nonetheless. I would miss my family & friends though. I guess my second choice of states would be Alabama. Weird I know but I visited there and had a great experience. I guess it just made me love Alabama.
I'd love to visit Italy. Well, all of Europe, really. I don't think I'd want to live anywhere but the States, though. I like living in the US but a really long photo vacation in Europe would be a lot of fun.
Michelle
I like Italy too, but I have seen a lot of dirt there. Same with France. Spain is nice. I still wouldn't want to live in Europe though... coming from Europe I have to say I know how good I have it here in the good ole US of A.
When i was a freshman in high school i shadowed a DJ at z93. I don't think he's there anymore but it changed my view of radio. I'm so glad i got to check it out.
I make out like it's all fun and games and don't get me wrong there are a lot of fun and games but it's also a lot of work. I love what I do and don't know how I could ever do anything else.
You've definitely got the voice for it. Very much a "radio voice".
Michelle
AWE THANK YOU!
