How'd you get started with compuers?

Computers are everywhere these days, but when did you first start using them?

My father started a computer science degree in 1984 when I was 4 years old, we bought a commodore 64 for him to work with (he later switched to an education major) that I was fascinated with. I was born with a degenerative spine condition so physical activity has always been very painful for me. I took to the computer and got to know the ins and outs of it better than my dad. In 1988 we upgraded to a 286 which is when I started some hardware hacking. I was 8 years old and my folks let me take a soldering iron to the computer and add memory to it. I used that 286 until 1995 when we got a Pentium 100 mhz Acer and I was introduced into the on-line world. Within 3 months of having the computer I became a SysAdmin on the PC World forum on CompuServe.

When I graduated High School my folks gave me the money to build my first computer and I haven't stopped since.

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

I'm not sure where I first heard about computers. It might have been the movie Wargames. It was around 1983, so the timing fits. All I know is I was about 12 and my friend and I really wanted a computer. We thought it cost thousands of dollars, though, and never thought we could really have one.

Christmas came and I was shocked to find a Commodore 64 under the tree. The computer cost so much that was all I got. No disk drive, no monitor. I hooked it up the the TV and wrote programs in BASIC to play with until someone wanted to watch TV and then I had to turn it off and lose everything. Somehow, I still got hooked. Smile

Next Christmas I got a disk drive and eventually a monitor and printer. I used to spend hours on the thing. At some point, around '86 or so, someone introduced me to the BBS world. I saved up to by a 300 baud modem out of a mail order catalog and I was online.

Since then, I've had a variety of computers. They are a huge part of my life to the point where I feel a little lost when I'm not online. I'm horribly shy "offline" and the computer is my way of connecting with other people.

My first computer was from a Tax return back in 1995, but I did meddle with computers before that... I can't remember if my schooling was the first or at work.. but that dates another few years back, so around 1990 is when I took my Computer and Office Occupations Training.

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

I started out with an Apple IIe in school, but the first one I owned was a Tandy Color Computer (CoCO) II. Like Michelle it didn't come with a drive (tape drive) to save the programs you wrote.

In an effort to "upgrade" to a disk drive we went and looked at a TSR-80 to buy for parts, not know they couldn't be used together. The TRS-80 came with an array of 3 drive, an 8" monitor, a 1 ton 9pin dot-matrix (remember those) printer, and an expansion kit that took it to 16k of memory. The DOS boot disks didn't work. I had to start the boot process on one disk and while it was still spinning switch to a different disk and if you timed it right you could get DOS to boot.

We ended up going to a Tandy 1000sx with an Apple emulator board. The emulator board never really worked so we returned it and bought a real Apple IIe from a PC store that went out of business.

We added some used 10meg hard drives hanging external with an external power supply that we salvaged from a 2 ton hard assembly from a mainframe. The drives were so worn out that the starter windings on the motor smoked one day and the only way to start the drive was to manually spin up the motor with your finger. Thats when motors weren't enclosed. We ran that way for aboout a year until we had enough money to upgrade to a single 45meg drive.

Oh the memories...

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

I touched my first computer at the ripe age of five in 1964 (there, I've dated myself) In high school I could go to the "math lab" which was in the back of a calculus class to work on one of two Wang 2200's that loaded off of a cassette tape. The cool thing was you were free to go there during study hall. Of course I'd tell the study hall teacher I was going to the math lab and only showed up 2/3rd's of the time to start with. By the time I graduated from high school I showed up pretty much all the time. Nobody wanted to touch a computer in the 70's except for a few of us. In 1980 I got my first job in the IT biz pounding a keyboard. So you see I started off working with computers because I could skip study hall and wander the halls of the high school. So my desire to be a derelict as a teenager became a segway into my adult life, where I'm still somewhat of a derelict... Innocent

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

As a young'un in Jr High, we had a keyboard and a printer that was hooked to a mainframe at UW-La Crosse. They let us play a Star Trek game on it during study hall. When you ran out of paper you flipped it over and fed it through again. Some days I miss the old ribbon and tractor feed dot matrix printers! Imagine that, no monitor! The next year the school came out with the Apple II's. We had to take a test and have a 'license' to use them. It's been all downhill since then. In high school I got ahold of an IBM PC. In theory I was supposed to be learning to type on it but I was actually playing a flight simulator game. I crashed a lot. Then life got in the way. My next foray in to computers was around 90 when I got my hands on a 80286. 12Mhz processor and a 10 megabyte harddrive. I ran a BBS, The Captains Chair using a BBS program called Searchlight. I even attended a sysops meeting in La Crosse once. The computers pretty much drew me back to an interest in CB radio which in turn led me to ham radio and now I'm just all over the gadget culture. I took some programming classes in college, but never really did anything with computers for money until recently.

I actually still have a dot-matrix printer that I use when quality isn't that big a deal. I also have a black and white laser printer and a inkjet color printer for when I really want to blow a lot of cash quickly. Big smile

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

I ditched the ink jet a couple of years ago. I got furious at my epson adter having to buy 2 new ink refills as the jets kept gumming up after a month of non-use. At $60 per refill it wasn't worth it. I ended up on newegg and found a Xerox laser that did 5ppm color and 20ppm b&w for $239 delivered. And it had a NIC to boot! Now some 3000 printed pages later I still have 1500 pages of toner left (approximately) and I'm done with the home ink jet nonsense. I would have spent far more than that on refills than what the printer cost by now.

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

Back in the day when HP Deskjets were all the rageand a new cheaper model came out every few weeks (color lasers were way to pricey back then) we told people to toss their deskjets when they ran out of ink because it was usually cheaper to by a new low end model that was better than what they had, than it was to buy the cartridges.

My favorite was how people would buy refurbed cartridges or buy the refill kits only to have the foil signal contacts fail because they were only good for so long.

I tried one of those refill kits once. Once was enough.

I have about 10 deskjets in my basement because of the cheaper printer than ink thing. I keep thinking I'll be able to do something productive with them, but I'm not sure I ever will.

Heh, I've got one in my closet. It keeps the dust from settling on the stuff below it.

I have a brand new HP all in one (print scan copy) sitting under my desk still in the unopened box. It came bundled with my new PC 6 months ago. If you know anyone looking to buy one let me know.

HP makes some laser all-in-ones, is it that or a jet?

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

I fill my own cartridges and have no problem.. I buy a new one on average every 5 or 6 fills. I have never really had a major problem with this printer (an all in one HP), but I did with the one I had before this one (a HP also but not an all in one).. .

Our first computer was a zx spectrum, that my brother learnt to programme on. I wasn't allowed to touch it much. I only really got into computers at university.

@CC: Inkjet. We splurged on a color laser (mostly so I could print CRO stuff Big smile ) so we don't need the inkjet.

I'm thinking that will be one of my first purchases out of my geek budget once I get back to work (Color Laser) and I keep an eye on craigslist to see if someone wants to give me one Smile

So do laser printers only cost more at start up? Seems like they have to get their color from somewhere?

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

Generally color lasers are more expensive but over the years they have come down dramatically in price. Toner does cost more but it depends on the brand and what color you buy. Each brand of printer has a different way of storing the toner. In order to tell if toner is less expensive than ink you would have to determine what two printers you were comparing and then get the yield from the toner and from the ink. This is usually done presuming a certain amount of converage per page. Some inkjets have seperate color catridges but most have a tricolor cartridge. Bad thing with these are that when one color goes, the whole thing needs to be replaced. With toner, you only change the one color (usually).

Also, when buying a color laser, you have to keep in mind that not all printers are made equally. Certain brands do tend to perform better than others. As with anything else, you need to do your research before you buy.

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

Agree with the hubby, but as a general rule of thumb RA's question, are Lasers cheaper over the life, the answer is yes.

Inkjets are MADE to be throw aways, the nozzles are designed that if they sit for as short as a month the nozzles will clog and you'll have to replace them. Lasers (color or black and white) use a powder and heat to basically melt the toner onto the sheet of paper, while the heating element can go bad, they are made to be replaced, and there is few other points of failure in the printing itself (rollers are another problem, but again they are made to be replaced by the end user)

I guess it's something I need to look into... then the next question.. are there laser printers that are also scanners and copiers like they have with the inkjets?

I don't know if they have them for the consumer level but Xerox makes small business ones and I think Dell might have some as well, but they will be much more than just a standard laser printer.

Re: How'd you get started with compuers?

I have a Xerox 6120n (which is no longer made) and it has worked flawlessly since day one. I have printed (okay my wife printed most of it) 2191 pages on the initial supplies with far more than the usual 5% coverage. It sill has supplies left. Do the math and figure out how much this would cost you in ink alone.

As a side note, don't expect to print pictures of any great quality with a laser.

True about the pictures Nightmarepatrol, however we have one of those HP photo printers (you put photo stock either 4x6 or 5x7 and it can print straight from the camera or media cards, or hook up to a PC) Better quality than ANY deskjet printer I've seen, even those that claim photo quality. Anything larger than 5x7 and I'd take it to a professional anyway.
