This came up in email because one of the Twitter folks I tagged as local is in Winona, which doesn't consider itself part of the Coulee Region. Unlike a city or a state, the borders of the C.R. are fuzzy. I've talked to various people who live on the edges and came up with roughly Galesville to the north, Sparta to the east, Viroqua/Stoddard to the south, and the Mississippi river to the West. That's the guidlines I used in picking communities to include on this site at this time. But this isn't a hard rule and I'm willing to change it to match the needs of the people using the site.
For the purposes of gathering local voices on Twitter, I fudged the borders a bit and included some of Minnesota, including Winona. My reasoning was that I wasn't finding many Twitter folk from the area and it seemed silly to exclude those from just across the river. After all, you can practically walk to La Crescent from La Crosse and I listen to a Winona radio station. Minnesota is mentioned on our news and in our conversations. It seems strange to exclude all those communities just because of some water between us.
Still, the line needs to be drawn somewhere and every Minnesotan I've talked to has said the Coulee Region is a Wisconsin thing. So, for now, I'm not going to list Minnesota in the community list. But that doesn't mean you aren't welcome here. This site isn't an exclusive club. Anyone can join, no matter where you live. And your events and businesses are close enough to be of interest to people in the Coulee Region, so feel free to add them. We are, after all, neighbors.
