Bear shot in Myrick Park
La Crosse police squad cars chased the animal through the park and along a fence in the northwest section of the park away from the shelters and playground, Lambert said.

Cornered and frightened, it scaled a tree above the old zoo.

Six to eight shots echoed through the park about 10:45 a.m., Lambert said, after a joint decision between police and the state Department of Natural Resources.

Source.

I find this very sad. They had the bear up a tree. Why not simply post a guard until a tranq gun could be brought in? If it comes down and starts charging, then shoot it.

Yup, I thought the same thing. To shoot the poor bear (that was frightened more than anyone in that park) was just ridiculous. They should definitely carry tranq guns and yes, they could've waited.

Tranquilizer Gun Closer Than

Tranquilizer Gun Closer Than DNR Officials Thought

But today, we learned there was a much quicker option. The nearest tranquilizer gun is much closer than DNR officials thought, it's actually at the Coulee Region Humane Society

Wouldn't have taken long at all to get... So sad. Sad
