Prairie Meadows park

Community: Holland

The map isn't accurate. It's on highway XX but I don't remember exactly where and the two cross streets I wrote down (Ver Meer & Prairie Woods St) are too new to be on the map. I'll try to find it again and do a better job marking it on the map. There is a tiny parking area on the Prairie Woods side and there are long paths leading to the park from there and from Ver Meer on the other side.

We didn't stop because the park was a long walk in but I took a picture from the road. The park has one large play structure with four slides on it. There's also an open shelter. There were no swings as far as I could see from the road.

Holland Park

Holland Park is located off McHugh road behind the Town of Holland's town hall building. There is a good sized parking lot far enough away from the play structures to give a bit of a buffer zone. The park itself is quite large and spread out with two open shelters and a building with bathrooms. There was a bubbler on the side of the bathroom building but it was removed when I visited recently.

Near the large shelter is a set of swings with two regular swings, three baby swings, and a chair swing. On another side of the shelter is the large sandbox, rocking toys, and digging toys. The baseball fields are behind the shelter. Farther out is a long cement tunnel partially buried underground for kids to crawl through and those toys where you can talk in one and the sound comes out the other. Then there's two climbing structures, each with multiple slides and a set of three tire swings. Near those is a smaller open shelter.

The park has some wonderful views of neighboring fields as it's up high above the road. It is a bit scary having that hill so close to the play areas, though. There isn't a lot of shade at this park outside of the shelters but the smaller shelter is near enough to the play areas to sit at the picnic tables and still keep an eye on the kids.

Cedar Meadows East Park

This is a large neighborhood park with new equipment. One climbing structure is small with no slide and one of those plastic lookout bubbles. The other one is larger with two slides, a climbing wall, a bridge, steps, and various ladder type climbing equipment. There are two swingsets. One has two regular swings and two baby swings. The other has a regular swing and what looks to be a handicapped enabled one. There is a basketball court with one hoop, two rocking toys, and a toy with two bars to hang on. There is an open shelter with three picnic tables and benches to sit on. Parking is on the street. The park is close to the highway and it was quite noisy when we were there.

Cedar Meadows West Park

This park is on the other side of the highway from Ceder Meadows East so there's no direct connection. Unfortunately, it's right on the other side of the highway with only a fence for separation, so it's quite noisy. It's unfortunate that the highway is so close because it is a very picturesque park with a walking trail down into the trees and the noise is a real detraction.

The playground area has a climbing structure with two slides. One of the slides has steps and is a small slide good for very young children. The other slide is a double slide which is only good for much older kids as the only way to get up to it is via a ladder or a sort of climbing wall with a chain to pull yourself up (see photos). There's also a regular climbing wall near the structure. The park also has the usual swing set with two regular and two baby slides plus a stand alone metal slide.

There are two benches and a picnic table for seating near the play area. No shelters, bathrooms, or drinking water. Parking is on the cul de sac and it's a bit of a walk from there to the play area.

The playground equipment is set way back from the road with Skogen field before it. There is a small plastic play structure with a slide, a wooden play structure with a metal slide, a swing set with three regular and one baby swing, and a metal climbing structure. The park also has an open shelter, a one hoop basketball court, and a sand baseball field.

Countryside Park

This park is right in the subdivision and all parking is on the street. It's quite a large park, though, with an ample play area. There are two climbing structures as well as a climbing wall, a teeter totter, and a stand alone slide.

It has a large open shelter with picnic tables dividing the park between the playground and the soccer field. As is typical with these newer parks, there isn't much shade outside of the shelter as the trees are all young and away from the equipment.

One annoyance is that there is a shooting range on the other side of the bordering houses that is quite noisy.

Deer Wood Park

Deerwood is a huge park over by the elementary school. It's backed up right against the bluffs and has lots of trails. There is a large parking lot that offers plenty of parking unless there's a baseball game going on. The parking lot is right next to the play area which is good for not having far to walk but a bit scary if you have little ones that might run out there.

The play area has a huge play structure with multiple slides and ladders to climb and bridges to cross. The side closer to the parking lot is better for the little ones because it has steps. Connected to that by monkey bars is a much higher part that has ladders going up it. The downside is that it's a lot easier for a child to run under and get to the "older kid" side than it is for an adult to walk around.

In addition to the climbing structure, there's a large swing-set with four regular swings and two baby swings. Unfortunately, the area under the swings tends to get flooded easy whenever it rains. There are a few other bad spots near the play structure as well.

Seating is plentiful in the play area with picnic tables and benches all around. There's not much shade to be had, though, as all the trees are small and farther away.

In addition to the play area, there are baseball fields, tennis courts, a basketball court that's also an ice hockey rink, and a semi open shelter. More information about these can be found on the Holmen website.

Gaynor Park

Community: Holland

The Google map isn't very helpful for this park. It looks as though Gaynor Dr hooks up to McHugh, but it doesn't. What you want to do is take Briggs along side the high school and make a left on Sween Drive. That takes you over to Gaynor. Take a left and follow that down to St Croix.

Unfortunately, the park itself isn't worth all the effort of finding it. The playground is old style equipment and there's not much there. The swing set has two regular swings, a swinging bar, and swinging rings. There are no baby swings. Attached to the swing set is a teeter totter and on the other side is a metal slide. The playground is way back from the road with the grass baseball field between it and the road.

Because of the old style equipment, this park isn't recommended for babies and toddlers. Older kids would do ok with it.

Halfway Creek Park

This is a large park in the heart of Holmen. There are two (that I know of) entrances. To get to the part of the park near the bathrooms, turn onto W Roberts street off of Main Street (behind the American Legion) follow that down into the park. If the playground area is your goal, you're better off turning onto Walnut drive, which is a small dead end street alongside Holmen Square on highway 35. There is a parking area at the end of the street right near the playground.

So far, I have only visited the playground part, so the summary as well as the photos are from there. You can find more photos as well as a map on Holmen's website, which is linked to below.

The playground area has a climbing structure with two slides and a swing set with four regular swings. Unfortunately, it does not have any baby swings. There is a picnic table for seating and lots of trees for shade.

This page will be updated when I've had a chance to visit and document the rest of the park.

Holland Estates Park

This is a small park in a new neighborhood. There isn't a lot there, but they may plan on expanding. Currently there is a large plastic slide, a swing set with four regular swings (no baby swings), a rocking horse, and a small modern teeter totter.

Note that the Google map isn't quite right. Off New Amsterdam road, you want to turn onto Mc Wain Drive, not Pine View as it's named on the map. You'll know you have the right road if you see the end of an airport runway on the other side. Seriously.
